Top Five
There are some things in life you will never forget, moments in which music plays an integral part of creating a memory. I don’t think I can count on my fingers how many musically related “moments” there have been for me thus far because music plays such an integral and inseparable role in my life. So I’ll give you the top five. Top five memories, associations, and moments music has contributed to, inspired or created.
1. Bungalow Bill by The Beatles – This is one of my first memories ever. My older sister and I had to have been about six and four years old, respectively. Dressed in our PJs and ready for bed, our parents put on The White Album, and we were mesmerized. Instead of winding down for the night, we danced and sung to the entire double LP. But the song I remember the most was “Bungalow Bill”. We played hunter and the tiger and ran around the living-room in circles chasing each other till our hearts content. Sheer childhood delight is what I associate with that song. It still brings back that feeling of dizzying bliss every time I hear it.
2. Kiss From A Rose by Seal – This was my first kiss. I was at a much anticipated middle school dance with my boyfriend. The whole night was a blur up until the last song of the night, which was a slow dance. We were instructed to be “a balloons-length” apart, which made kissing seem like an unlikely possibility. But, we were young, eager, and inspired. Thanks Seal. Still to this day when I hear that song in a CVS or wafting from an FM radio somewhere in the distance, it brings back a warm glow.
3. What I Got by Sublime – This song sums up my entire Southern California high school experience. I think I am one of the few people who experienced Sublime from a purely music loving, innocent, and entirely sober standpoint. I don’t think there was ever a car ride I took in my white Jeep Cherokee where I wasn’t blasting this song, or one of their many other gems. Thanks to my slightly more rebellious older sister and her friends, I was introduced to one of my favorite bands of all time. They would become a formative part of my musical education, and the subject of many a college essay or school project, along with The Beatles.
4. Either Way by Guster – I started going to see shows in high school and Guster was one of the first bands I ever followed faithfully. Although they are an East coast band, my friends and I would go to every single show they played in LA. Memories are made when you love a band so much it brings tears to your eyes when you see them play live. I had never experienced the whole “Beatles mania” sensation you see on documentaries when girls would cry and clutch their hair when The Beatles played, but I experienced it with Guster. My favorite song of theirs is “Either Way” because it is anthemic magic, and seemed to capture the entire high school angst that everyone felt but could never quite put into words. I grew up to their music and still love them to this day.
5. All Cause of You by The 88 – I fell in love to this song. I literally listened to it on repeat, over and over again, as I fell in love with the man who introduced me to them. There are few songs you can say you owe your happiness to, but this song, I’d say, is one of them. Thanks for opening my ears, eyes and heart guys.
